Apprenticeship funding and the levy



The introduction of the apprenticeship levy has been a major change to the way in which the apprenticeship system in England works. The following resources introduce the levy and provide some evaluation on how it is working.

Understanding the levy

The apprenticeship levy was introduced in 2017. It requires larger firms to pay a levy to support the growth of the apprenticeship system. The following resources provide more information on apprenticeship levy.


Paying providers

If you are a levy payer it should be easy to pay providers by going through the following steps:

  • read the latest government guidance on making payments
  • sign your ESFA employer agreement
  • add PAYE schemes you want to use for apprenticeship funding
  • add your training provider(s)
  • invite other members of your team to join the account
  • add apprentices (you can request your training provider does this)
  • search for apprenticeships and approved training providers 
  • manage and view the transactions in your account
  • transfer a maximum of 25% of your unused annual funds to other employers
