Asking applicants to swim 100 yards with their hands and feet bound might sound extreme, but it’s a test the US Army uses to select marines. Alarmed at the high drop-out rate, the army commissioned a study which showed that testing for candidates’ introversion/extraversion and positive affect meant they could, in hindsight, predict 70% of the assessment outcomes. Could your future assessment centre include an eight-mile run whilst carrying a 23kg pack?

Under the proposed new visa system for international hires, students will get zero salary points if they are going to earn less that £23,000 per annum. Although yet to pass through the legislative process, there are plenty of steps employer and universities can take to prepare for the new system that is due to come into force in January 2021.

Does going to university make you wealthy? Research published by the IFS this week demonstrates that graduates are £100,000 better off on average than non-graduates. But one-in-five would be richer if they had followed a different path. Although one newspaper highlighted that education secretary Gavin Williamson’s own degree in sociology from Bradford could be under threat.

An Australian academic once said the UK’s university admission system is based on teachers lying about pupil’s predicted grades and universities lying about what grades they will accept. The Office for Students has announced a review of the whole admission system so students may end up applying to university only after they have their A-level grades. According to poll, students themselves want to see change too.

The shadow minister for skills has joined the debate on apprentice funding. Emma Hardy has argued that levy funding should be restricted to the under-25s without a degree. Only a week ago, Gavin Williamson launched a review of the senior leaders apprenticeship. The arguments are going to continue until the funding crisis facing apprenticeships is resolved.

One item not on the ISE Development Conference agenda is how to learn a musical instrument. Some firms are now offering music lessons to help reduce stress in the workplace. Which seems a fitting note to end our news summary on.
