League tables should consider pupils' backgrounds, study suggests

Pupils' backgrounds should be taken into account when compiling data for secondary school league tables, the research by Bristol University suggests. 

Factors such as gender, age, ethnicity, residential deprivation, fee meals and special needs should be considered, report says. 

A fifth of "underperforming" schools would see their league table position change by more than 500 places if such details were taken into account, according to research.
