Apprenticeship scheme failing disadvantaged students

The number of apprenticeship starts among people from disadvantaged backgrounds fell from 25 per cent in 2015-16 to 22.6 per cent in 2017-18, the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) stated.

The report by the cross-party group of MPs criticised the DfE's inability to address the lack of women in STEM apprenticeships.

"Ultimately, the lack of progress has disrupted the direction of the programme," said PAC chair Meg Hillier.
